military time, also known as 24-Hour Time or Zulu Time, is the standard operation procedure used by the military and other organizations to measure the time of day. Military time follows a 24-hour clock and is based on a system where 00:00 (midnight) all the way through to 23:59 (one minute before midnight).
As an example, if you were to translate 5:00 pm into military time it would be 1700 hours. The "17" is used for any hour between five in the afternoon up until four in the evening. This means that 1:00 pm would be 1300 and 2:00 pm would be 1400. It's important to note that 12:00 pm is still represented with 1200, instead of 0000 or 2400.
For anything from 0001 (one minute past midnight) through to 0459 (four minutes before five in the morning), you simply read it as two consecutive numbers like 0145 for one forty-five in the morning. For middle of night hours, a double zero format will represent it like so; 0200 – two o'clock at night or 2400 – midnight.
Military time eliminates any confusion when telling and listening to times especially in high-stress situations such as military operations, air traffic control, and emergency personnel responding onsite . Instead of saying five o'clock at night one can simply say 'seventeen hundred hours' which will rapidly eliminate confusion about morning or evening when dealing with stress filled situations.
